O*NET® Ability ProfilerTM

Overview

This instrument is a career exploration tool that helps clients plan their work lives. The O*NET Ability Profiler uses a paper and pencil format with optional apparatus parts and computerized scoring. Individuals can use O*NET Ability Profiler results to:

  • identify their strengths and areas for which they might want to receive more training and education
  • identify occupations that fit their strengths

The O*NET Ability Profiler measures nine job-relevant abilities:

  • Verbal Ability
  • Arithmetic Reasoning
  • Computation
  • Spatial Ability
  • Form Perception
  • Clerical Perception
  • Motor Coordination
  • Finger Dexterity
  • Manual Dexterity

O*NET Ability Profiler Features

  • The O*NET Ability Profiler must be administered by staff who provide instructions to individuals taking the assessment
  • User Guide provided for workforce development professionals
  • Flexible administration:
    • It can be administered in individual or group settings
    • It has both paper and pencil and optional apparatus sections
  • Computerized scoring

Getting Started

The O*NET® Ability ProfilerTM consists of several components:

To administer the O*NET Ability Profiler, you will need both the O*NET Ability Profiler Instrument Materials and the O*NET Ability Profiler Administration Materials.

To score the O*NET Ability Profiler, you will need the O*NET Ability Profiler Scoring Materials.

To conduct training on how to administer the O*NET Ability Profiler, you will need the O*NET Ability Profiler Training Materials.

The files below are provided to enable users to download and print the O*NET Ability Profiler instrument and related materials (e.g., training manual, administration manual, user's guides, scoring software). Three types of files have been produced: 1) PDF files for "Desktop" viewing and printing, 2) PDF "Print Shop" files that can be used by programs/organizations with access to professional printing equipment, and 3) computer software to enable users to score the O*NET Ability Profiler electronically. Summary descriptions of the files are provided below. A more detailed description of the files and their contents is available below for download.

Data Entry Program

The O*NET Ability Profiler Data Entry Program provides users a method for manually entering the responses from the O*NET Ability Profiler Answer Sheet and creating an input file that can be used by the O*NET Ability Profiler Scoring Software. The O*NET Data Entry Program has a user-friendly design with a verification process that helps users reduce the chance of data entry errors. This process aids in obtaining accurate results. While the use of a scanner is recommended, the O*NET Ability Profiler Data Entry Program provides an alternative method for entering data without the need for a scanner.

Instrument Materials

The O*NET Ability Profiler Instrument Materials include all of the items needed by the participants/examinees to complete Parts 1 through 7 of the O*NET Ability Profiler. (See the end of this section for ordering information for the "Manual Dexterity Pegboards" and "Finger Dexterity Pegboards.")

    This is a new work related ability assessment. Participants receive a profile of their occupational abilities that provides valuable knowledge about their strengths and weaknesses. The tool helps foster career awareness by linking the client to the world of work via the 800+ occupations within the O*NET system. One reusable Instrument-booklet is needed for each participant.

    Scannable answer sheets are used by individuals taking the Ability Profiler to record their responses to Parts 1-6. Optical scanning equipment and software are required for electronic scoring.     Using Your O*NET Ability Profiler Results is a handout that must be provided to each individual taking the assessment. It provides an explanation of how results should be used.
